Barbara K. Day

Barbara began music instruction on the piano at the age of 5.  When she was 13, she stumbled across a violin in a great-uncle’s closet, and taught herself to play.  Soon she realized she needed lessons so she found odd jobs around the neighborhood to earn money so she could study with a violin professor at Drury University in Springfield Missouri. She played in the high school orchestras, Interlochen Summer Institute, and the Kansas City Youth Symphony when the family moved to Kansas City.

She earned a scholarship to the Conservatory of Music in Kansas City when she was 17.  She played in the Conservatory Chamber Orchestra, the Conservatory Symphony, and the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, as well as studied theatre and dance.  She had an opportunity to work in the USO for a year, and while in Europe she was able to take lessons from a professor from the Vienna School of Music.

Returning from Europe, Barbara returned to school, with elementary education as her main focus, still studying the violin, as well as dance, theatre, art history.  She participated in the Springfield Missouri Community Orchestra until completing her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Southwest Missouri State University.  She then taught 6th grade classroom, incorporating all of the arts into her education of the students.

In 1975 she married, had 2 children, and returned to school to earn her master’s degree in reading from Southwest Missouri State University.  All this time her violin playing was put on the back burner, although it was always in her heart.

At the urging of a friend, Barbara sat in with a local folk-rock band in 1998 and discovered an entirely different expression on the violin, with a remarkable capacity for improvisation, lending itself to all types of music.  She began once again to play, but this time did studio recordings and played in local groups in various venues.

While in Phoenix visiting her mother, Barbara took some lessons from a fiddle teacher from Ireland and published her Celtic CD the following year in 2005.
That same year, Barbara was hired by the Scottsdale Arizona Schools to teach String Orchestra to 4th & 5th Grade students.  The Scottsdale Schools have been known widely for their strong strings programs for quite some time, so this was in her words “BEST JOB EVER!”

At the present time she resides in St. Augustine, FL and teaches private violin and viola lessons.  She has spent her first two years volunteering in the public schools and for the St. Augustine Youth Orchestra helping to promote strings programs and young people learn to play strings instruments, prior to becoming the director.
